What to Write in a Condolence Message
When someone passes, it is natural to want to say something, and just as natural to worry about saying the wrong thing. A condolence message does not need to be long or eloquent. A few sincere words, offered honestly, are always enough.
Short messages
If you did not know the person well, or simply want to keep it brief, a short message works beautifully. For example: "Thinking of your family during this difficult time." Or: "So sorry for your loss. He will be dearly missed." Or: "Sending you strength and comfort."
Longer messages and shared memories
If you knew the person, a specific memory is one of the kindest things you can offer. Families treasure these small stories. For example: "Mrs Nadarajah taught me to love reading. I still remember her patience with our whole class. Thank you for everything." A memory shows the family that their loved one made a difference.
Phrases to use with care
Try to avoid phrases that rush a person's grief, such as "everything happens for a reason" or "at least they lived a long life." These are well meant but can feel dismissive. It is enough to acknowledge the loss and offer your support.
Leaving a tribute
On Obituary.sg, anyone can leave a message on a notice's tribute wall. You only need a name and a few words. Your message stays with the notice, so the family can return to it whenever they wish.
