Pek Kim: A Guide to Condolence Money in Singapore

Pek kim is condolence money offered to a bereaved family at a wake, most commonly among Chinese families in Singapore. It is a practical gesture of support toward funeral costs, and a way of showing that the family does not grieve alone.

How much to give

There is no fixed amount. What matters is the gesture, not the sum. Give what you can and what feels right for your relationship to the family. Some follow the custom of giving an amount that is an odd number, to distinguish it from the even numbers associated with happy occasions.

The white envelope

Place the money in a plain white envelope, never a red one, as red is the colour of celebration. Write your name on the envelope so that the family knows who to thank later. A short line of condolence may be added, but is not expected.

When and how to give

Offer the envelope when you arrive at the wake, handing it to a family member or placing it at the reception table where a register is often kept. Sign the register if there is one. This helps the family keep track of visitors during a busy and tiring time.

If you prefer not to

Pek kim is entirely optional, and not part of every family's custom. Your presence, your quiet words, and your help during the wake are all meaningful in their own right.
