Malay Muslim Funeral Rites in Singapore
In Islam, a burial takes place as soon as possible, usually within a day of death. The rites are guided by religious practice and carried out with dignity and simplicity. This guide offers a respectful overview for families and for those wishing to pay their respects.
Washing and shrouding
The body is washed, known as the ghusl, and then wrapped in plain white cloth, the kafan. These acts are performed by family members of the same gender or by those trained to do so, often with the help of the mosque or a funeral service.
The funeral prayer
The congregation performs the funeral prayer, the solat jenazah, at a mosque or at the void deck before burial. It is a short standing prayer offered on behalf of the deceased. Guests who are not Muslim may attend quietly and offer their condolences to the family.
Burial
Burial in Singapore usually takes place at the Muslim cemeteries at Pusara Aman or Pusara Abadi in Lim Chu Kang. The body is laid to rest facing the direction of prayer. The ceremony is simple and solemn, without elaborate decoration.
Condolences and the mourning period
Family and friends gather to recite prayers, often on the third, seventh, and fortieth days after the passing. A common phrase of condolence is to wish that the deceased is placed among the righteous. Modest, covered clothing is appropriate for visitors, and it is kind to offer help with meals or arrangements during the mourning days.
